Lesson 1 of 4

Choosing the right breed

The breed you start with shapes your milk yield, your feed cost and how well the animal copes with your local climate. This lesson compares the common dairy goat breeds kept around Nakuru.

  • Toggenburg and Saanen: strong milkers, do well in cool highland areas.
  • German Alpine crosses: hardy and adaptable for smallholder herds.
  • Always buy from a keeper who can show you the dam's milk record.
